I had the privilege of sharing my book at the 2012 Meet the Faces Behind the Books Colorado Author Event at the Englewood Library on Sunday. While it was fun to share my story with new readers, it was also great to connect to other authors and share secrets about how to market my book.
Word of mouth is powerful: Here are some of the things I learned.
- Goodreads has an author page that can be set up to interact with readers who are looking for new books to read. Set up your author’s page to blog, create discussions with your audience and link to other social networking sites.
- Create a bookplate and send it as a gift to those who join your newsletter. When they receive the bookplate, they often buy your book to paste it into!
- Bookmarks make great take-aways. Be sure to have your full contact information on them.
- Create videos of your speaking points- three minute segments to entice your audience. This is a great way to highlight a point from your book and also to show off your speaking skills, if professional speaking is what you want to do.
- Everyone is on their own journey, and we can’t compare our own walk with another person. I have taken an interest in a writer who has had a few difficult months- She reminds me of myself when I was younger. What I know is that we are in the right place at the right time, learning as we go. We can’t expect to be where someone else is- all we can do is learn from one another, and keep taking step after step, and trust the process of writing and life. Each day I am learning to be more present to the journey instead of waiting for the destination. I am learning to not be afraid of what I don’t know, and take baby steps to learn the next lesson.
