How to Experience Moments of Well-Being

Today as I was walking and listening to my Philosopher’s Notes, I came across a great quote that I related to my own life.  The quote come from Pema Chodron’s book, “The Places that Scare You” A Guide to Fearlessness in Difficult Times.

She says, “The ordinariness of our good fortune can make it hard to catch.”

It is so easy to get bogged down in life with all of the problems that we see around us that we forget how good our life really is.   Pema recommends we  “incline our minds to joy.”

When I start looking for beauty and love around me, guess what?  I see amazing examples of Divine Love in action in the people I meet, the beautiful colors of the fall trees, the blue sky, my dog Sophie who reminds me to get out and walk in nature, etc.  On the other hand, when I look for things that are wrong in my world such as my car needing to be fixed, and all the little things that irk me about the people I encounter, I just bring more of the same into my world.  So the question is, what am I choosing to focus on?

In order to feel a sense of well-being in your body, you have to put yourself in the present moment.  Worrying about the future or living in regret over the past only takes energy from being here and now. So maybe you think your here and now isn’t so wonderful.  My question to you is “What are you choosing to focus on?”  Is the goodness in your life so ordinary that you are overlooking it?  Can you look around you right now and see three things that you are grateful for?  A job that earns you good money, a lunch that is healthy, a good friend who shows up when you most need her?  Take a minute right now and on a sticky note, write down the three things that make you smile, and feel good.

Now imagine if you carried that technique into any moment that you felt overwhelmed by the problems in your life.  Do you think you might feel a shift in how you perceived those problems?   Maybe they are really opportunities in disguise. I think you might find that your life is pretty incredible right now.  You can start with the fact that you got out of bed and can move!

So re-frame your current situation by focusing on the good in your life and see what kind of shift your life can make.  I encourage you to try this technique and check back in and let me know how it goes.

  1. Jan,
Thank you for the gentle reminder that we constantly attract what we focus on. If I see something or someone as being a certain way, that’s all I can see – whether good or bad. It’s the reason we are blinded but love in the early stages, we see what we want to see.
Hmmm, so what can I focus on now to bring more of the yummy-goodness life has to offer?
